Any indian government website has the domain .ac.in

Hi friends, I have noticed that almost all universities, colleges, educational institutions etc. which are owned by the Indian government are normally with the domain .ac.in like du.ac.in, ignou.ac.in, jnu.ac.in or almost every institution. You can just realize it by googling .ac.in and there would be the incredible list of the websites. So, .ac.in is only regitered for educational institutions that too of the government of India or can we buy them too. I have never seen any .ac.in being sold or being used anywhere else.

ac.in, res.in, & edu.in can only be applied by Public/Private Educational Institutions, Schools, Colleges and Vocational Institutes and Universities.

A valid document needs to be supported while registering these domains, probably a letter/fax on the organization's letterhead.

One can register those domains names thru the following registrars.
