With the correct hardware and optimisation, you can successfully use shared hosting for Magento. The key is to find a hosting provider that truly specialises in Magento and fully understands resource requirements and optimisation principles, and won’t oversell server resources.

There are many shared hosting companies that can tick the box to say that their servers meet the minimum requirements, but without utilising the latest hardware (e.g. RAID 10, DUAL XEON, 32GB RAM, etc), MySQL optimisation (e.g. query caching), APC, etc, it most likely won’t be sufficient.

As a business case, from our experience most Magento Hosting customers do not have the knowledge, expertise or time to correctly configure a VPS or dedicated server for Magento, and then to correctly maintain and keep the server patched securely.
