What is an auto-responder?

Hello to all

An auto-responder is an automated e-mail response that our server can be set up to send to the address of someone e-mailing the auto-responder address. For example, we could set up info@your-actual-domain.com as an auto-responder. Then whenever someone requested information, the text file that you create and specify will be e-mailed to the sender of the e-mail. This could be something as simple as, "thank you for your e-mail we will get back to you in the next 24 hours." Or you could send a 100 page informational packet.

Quite simply, it’s a piece of software that enables you to send emails to people automatically. An autoresponder is a program which automatically generates a response when it receives information. The classic use of autoresponders is in email management, but these programs can also be found on websites. For a majority of realtors or lenders, the term "auto-responder" means a message that has been written in advance for the sake of communicating with your clientele. To them, it is something like: "Sorry, I won't be around all day. Please check back." This might seem like a facsimile that runs on the internet, do you think so? However, this is a very wrong perception of what an auto-responder really is. The answer is not an inch close to the real meaning.

The first autoresponders were created within mail transfer agents that found they could not deliver an e-mail to a given address. These create bounce messages such as "your e-mail could not be delivered because..." type responses. Today's autoresponders need to be careful to not generate e-mail backscatter, which can result in the autoresponses being considered E-mail spam.

Autoresponders are often used as e-mail marketing tools, to immediately provide information to their prospective customers and then follow-up with them at preset time intervals.

Such follow-up autoresponders can be divided into two categories:

* Outsourced ASP model — these autoresponders operate on the provider's infrastructure and are usually configurable via a web-based control panel. The customer pays a monthly usage fee. This is easiest to implement for the end-user.

* Server-side — enables users to install the autoresponder system on their own server. This requires technical skills.

Autoresponders are also incorporated into electronic mailing list software, to confirm subscriptions, unsubscriptions, posts, and other list activities.
