difference between a search engine and a directory?
A search engine, such as Yahoo! or Google, is an online tool that helps users of the World Wide Web find the sites and information they're looking for. Most search engines use automated programs (sometimes called spiders) to look for relevant information based on keywords entered by the user, and search not only web sites' content but also their web addresses, number of pages, and links.
A search directory, such as Yahoo! Directory, is a catalog of web sites organized by category to allow users to easily browse for the information they need. Unlike search engines, which locate and display relevant information based on a defined formula using an automated software program, search directories are organized by real people who discover new sites and relevant information by exploring the Web themselves and reviewing email submissions.
Both search engines and directories can help drive customers to your web site, and neither guarantees that your site will be included. |

Simple, in a directory you are the search engine. You have to traverse through the directory looking for what you want.
A search engage takes your requirement, what you are looking for, and returns back the hits that relate. _________________ Catalytic Converter|Fuel Pump Assembly |

Search Engines
Search engines use computer programs called Robots to automatically go from page to page through the web, reading content, and adding it to their databases. To speed up the process of getting your site indexed, they usually have a way for you to submit your site for indexing. You usually only have to tell a Search Engine the URL (address) of your site and it takes care of the rest.
Directories
Directories are run by humans who review web sites and categorize them within their directories. This leads to a more abridged set of sites which can good or bad depending on what you're searching for. |

I totally agree with Gardener. Search Engine automatically crawl, analyze the website health. It has the ability to think and give result depends on the query passed. But, Directories will just display those websites that are submitted by the humans or software. Also, Directory submission is one of the SEO Techniques. _________________ web hosting best | bluehost report |

| Search engines are beneficial to find information world wide.To speed up the process of getting your site indexed, they normally have a way for you to submit your site for indexing.while Directories are run by people who review web sites and describe them within their directories. This increase to a more abridged set of sites which can good or bad depending on what you're searching for. |

There are indeed a lot of differences between search engines and directories. If I were to search say, auto dealers Chicago, on a search engine, I'd get as a result a page of a site not necessarily the home page where as a directory search would show me only homepages that are relevant. Search engines are more relevant to the actual state of things on the internet thus more trust worthy. _________________ Oracle Training | Selenium Training London |
